Under the 2023 Hunter Moon we planted almost 3000 cloves of garlic.
We order our garlic from Rasa Creek Farm, a farm that develops and maintains heritage garlic seed stock. We have learned that Red Russian is a catch all term for hard neck garlic that has some purple marbling so we wanted to work with producers that maintain unique seed stock. Maintaining diverse seeds is important to support the diversity of our planet. With all of the knowledge sharing that happens it’s to easy to think there are only a few niche varieties of things when in fact there are countless varieties of plants and only the experts in the field will know the heritage of the various cultivars. Rather than being the expert of one thing we want to support the producers that are doing the work to maintain diverse communities of seeds, plants and animals. In the summer of 2023 we harvests 20+ lbs of garlic scapes and sold most to Mary’s Garden. The rest we are developing small batch garlic scape salt to incorporate into our summer farm baskets in years to come. After the scapes were harvested we waited a few more weeks and harvested almost 3000 bulbs of BEAUTIFUL garlic! We are saving most for seed but have some available for private sale.
